About the Role
We are seeking a Junior Full-Stack Java Developer (Freelance) to join our client's mission-critical project in Mechelen, Belgium. This 11-month freelance assignment is your opportunity to help digitize and future-proof the management of asbestos certification, directly impacting public health and sustainability in Flanders. As part of a high-impact team, you'll help build a robust web application that will serve as the backbone for asbestos certification and quality assurance across the region.

Our client is leading the charge by developing a web platform to collect, manage, and assure the quality of asbestos certificates for all buildings constructed before 2001. Your work will directly support the digital transformation of public health and environmental safety, ensuring that building owners, notaries, and certified experts have seamless access to critical data. The stakes are high: your code will help safeguard the health of millions and drive the region's sustainability goals.
What You'll Be Doing
* Develop and maintain Java-based web applications, ensuring high performance and reliability
* Implement both backend (Java/J2EE, Spring Boot) and frontend (React) features for a modular, scalable platform
* Integrate and optimize database solutions using DB2 and PostgreSQL
* Design and consume RESTful services to enable seamless data exchange
* Collaborate within Agile teams, contributing to sprints and iterative delivery
* Apply test-driven development practices to ensure code quality and maintainability
* Engage in rapid coding, testing, and debugging cycles, with openness to coaching and guidance
* Contribute to the digitalization of asbestos certification processes, supporting public sector transformation
What We're Looking For
* Minimum 1 year of demonstrable experience developing Java-based applications
* Certified training or equivalent experience in Java/J2EE and related environments
* Hands-on experience with Spring Boot, React, REST services, DB2, and PostgreSQL
* Proven ability to deliver programming assignments efficiently, including coding, testing, and debugging
* Basic knowledge and practical experience with Agile development methodologies
* Experience working in or with the public sector; experience within the Flemish Government is a plus
* Experience with modular application development and test-driven development
* Experience in software development related to asbestos removal is an advantage
* Ownership mindset, problem-solving drive, and a passion for building solutions that matter
Language Proficiency
* Fluency in Dutch at European CEFR level C2 is required
