Professor in dendrochronology for climate and environmental history
The Faculty of Engineering, Department Water and Climate is looking for a part‑time professor (0.1 FTE, 3 years renewable).

Responsibilities
* Education and Research domain
o Supervise MSc theses.
o Occasionally teach at the MSc level on topics linked to your expertise.
* Research tasks
o Conduct research in dendrochronology and climate reconstruction, investigating hydroclimatic variability through tree‑ring analysis.
o Explore climate dynamics, forest ecosystems in hydrological cycles, and methods for reconstructing historical climate data.
o Engage in interdisciplinary collaborations analyzing the interplay between past climates and socio‑environmental changes.
o Supervise students in research practices and field studies.
o Link historical climate data to contemporary issues, enhancing understanding of sustainability and climate resilience.
o Advance multi‑proxy approaches, integrating tree‑ring data with other high‑resolution proxies and historical documents for comprehensive studies.
o Investigate historical relationships between climate and wildfires to assess how fire regimes have changed over time.
o Support recruitment of strategic research projects on dendrochronology at national and European/international levels.
o Supervise and guide PhD students.
o Collaborate with partners in Belgium and other EU countries.
* Other tasks
o Engage in public education through publications and lectures on the importance of tree rings and climate challenges.
o Contribute to the visibility and networking of the department and the university.
Profile
* Proven research experience in Tree‑ring Analysis, Climatic Variability, Multi‑Proxy Approaches, and Fire‑Climatic Interactions.
* Outstanding publication track record in leading journals focusing on historical land‑use practices and climate events.
* Level of professorship acquired at another university.
* Understanding of the university’s vision of education; first appointment dependent on successful teaching session.
* Language regulations: Teaching requires ERK level C1 in the language of instruction (often Academic English). Administrative Dutch (ERK level B2) will be provided via integration course if needed.
* Non‑EEA nationality: Must meet conditions for a valid permit and comply with VUB residence requirements.

Offer
Appointment as professor, 0.1 FTE, 3 years renewable, planned starting date 01/07/2026. Salary linked to the government scale.
