The company is scaling its commercial footprint across multiple geographies and product lines. Contract volume, customer-led legal queries (DPAs, security questionnaires, redlines, renewals) and CSM/Sales enablement requests are all rising faster than headcount.
We need a Legal Counsel — Commercial & Legal Operations who pairs solid commercial lawyering with a hands-on appetite for legal operations: building playbooks, working with legal tech, and using AI to extend their reach. Someone who has seen mature legal ops in action at a previous employer and now wants to help build it here.
This is a hybrid role that combines traditional in-house legal expertise with a strong legal operations and technology mindset. While solid legal credentials are essential, what will truly differentiate successful candidates is their operational thinking, process-driven approach, and fluency with modern legal technology and AI tools.
We are specifically looking for someone who has worked within a mature in-house legal environment and has hands-on experience using tools such as CLMs, contract review platforms, ticketing systems, and AI-enabled legal solutions as part of their day-to-day workflow. The ideal candidate does not necessarily need to have implemented these systems themselves, but they should have operated effectively within a well-developed legal operations ecosystem and understand how these environments function at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Lawyering
* Negotiate and draft commercial customer and supplier contracts: SaaS terms, DPAs, security schedules, NDAs, partnership agreements.
* Translate technical, security and compliance changes (e.g. sub-processor additions, infrastructure updates, regulatory developments) into customer-ready talk tracks and CSM enablement materials.
* Provide pragmatic, risk-weighted advice to Sales, CS, Product and People teams on day-to-day commercial questions.
* Backstop on broader in-house matters: employment, data protection, IP, corporate housekeeping — direct what we handle internally vs route to external counsel.
Legal Operations
* Build and continuously improve our internal legal knowledge base — playbooks, fall-back positions, FAQs, template libraries — so Sales and CS can self-serve on standard customer queries and standard pushback.
* Work with the existing legal tech stack (CLM, e-signature, ticketing) and propose targeted improvements where they're warranted. We don't expect a wholesale re-platforming on day one.
* Embed AI into legal workflows as a default tool — for first-pass review, redlining, knowledge retrieval, and extending coverage into adjacent practice areas or geographies you don't natively know.
* Track and report on legal ops metrics: contract cycle time, % standard vs negotiated, ticket volume and SLA, self-service deflection rate.
Stakeholder & External Counsel
* Manage external counsel relationships and budget for the areas under remit.
* Partner closely with the CTO and CSM leadership on customer-facing technical and compliance topics.
* Contribute to the function's longer-term roadmap as it matures — we expect this role's scope and seniority to grow as the person does.
Must-haves
* Around 3 years PQE
* Meaningful time in-house at a software / SaaS business with a mature legal ops setup.
* Commercial contracting as their primary craft. SaaS contracts, DPAs, NDAs, supplier terms. Other specialisms (employment, data privacy, IP) are bonuses, not prerequisites.
* Genuine AI fluency in legal work. Daily user of AI tools for drafting, review, summarisation and knowledge retrieval.
* Scale-up mentality. Comfortable being a sole-IC operator, no large legal team to fall back on, comfortable with ambiguity and rapid iteration.
* English fluent (working language).
Strong bonuses
* Spanish / French
* Direct experience operating across multiple EU jurisdictions.
* Has personally built or contributed to a legal knowledge base, self-service portal, or playbook used by Sales/CS at a previous employer.
