About the role
The Dangerous Goods and Special Loads Officer is responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient handling of dangerous goods (DG) and special loads within Maersk Air Cargo's ground operations, aligning with international aviation regulations, company policies, and industry best practices. This role is critical in maintaining the integrity of our cargo operations while mitigating risks associated with hazardous materials and specialized shipments. This role can be based anywhere in North West Europe and will require a presence in both office and airside environments, with occasional travel as required.
What you’ll be doing
1. Ensure full compliance with IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), ICAO Technical Instructions, local civil aviation authority regulations, and Maersk Air Cargo policies (GOM) for the transport of dangerous goods and special loads within ground operations.
2. Oversee the acceptance, handling, and transportation of dangerous goods within the ground operations environment, ensuring adherence to proper documentation, labelling, marking, and packaging requirements.
3. Provide on-the-ground guidance on special loads, including perishable goods, live animals (AVI), oversized cargo, and other non-standard shipments requiring special handling within the airport environment.
4. Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments on DG and special load operations within ground handling areas to identify and mitigate potential safety and compliance risks.
5. Collaborate with airlines, ground handling agents, freight forwarders, and regulatory bodies to ensure proper coordination and compliance for DG and special shipments within the immediate airport operational area.
6. Lead the investigation and reporting of any dangerous goods-related incidents, discrepancies, or non-compliance issues within ground operations, recommending corrective actions as necessary.
7. Develop and deliver training materials and conduct training sessions for a diverse range of personnel, including ground operations staff, pilots, mechanics, and ground handling agents, on DG regulations, special load handling, and safety procedures. This requires either existing IATA Dangerous Goods Instructor certification or a clear demonstration of the capability to achieve certification in the near future.
8. Maintain accurate records and reports related to dangerous goods and special loads to meet regulatory and company requirements specific to ground operations.
9. Support emergency response planning and preparedness for DG incidents at the airport or within the ground operations supply chain.
10. Stay updated on changes in regulations, emerging risks, and best practices related to dangerous goods and special loads, with a focus on their impact on ground operations and the broader operational environment.
To succeed in this role, we believe that you can offer
11. Minimum 5 years of experience in air cargo ground operations, dangerous goods handling, or related ground operations roles.
12. Current IATA Dangerous Goods Instructor certification or demonstrable readiness to achieve certification.
13. Strong knowledge of IATA, ICAO, and local aviation authority regulations regarding dangerous goods and special loads, with a focus on ground handling procedures.
