Topic Description

AssessmentQ is a complex digital exam platform where changes to one part of the codebase can unexpectedly impact other areas. To maintain software quality, it is crucial to determine what needs to be tested when modifications are made. This thesis explores the feasibility of developing a code analyzer that identifies affected components and recommends targeted testing to prevent regressions and ensure stability.

This thesis aims to explore the feasibility of developing a code analyzer that helps determine what needs to be tested based on code changes. By analyzing dependencies and assessing the impact of modifications, the tool will provide targeted recommendations on which parts of the system should undergo testing to maintain stability and prevent regressions.

The research will investigate various techniques for identifying affected components, leveraging historical data to predict high-risk changes, and integrating automated impact analysis into the software development lifecycle to streamline testing efforts.

Research Questions:

1. How can a code analyzer be designed to automatically determine which parts of the system require testing based on a given code change?
2. What methods can be used to track dependencies and assess their role in code change impact?
3. How can historical version control data be leveraged to predict areas most susceptible to change-related failures and guide testing efforts?
4. What techniques can be employed to prioritize testing areas based on the severity and scope of the change?
5. How can an automated impact analysis tool be effectively integrated into existing software development and CI/CD workflows?

Expected Outcomes:

6. Development of a proof-of-concept tool that identifies the parts of the system requiring testing after a code change.
7. A methodology for prioritizing testing efforts based on the impact assessment of code modifications.
8. Identification of key dependencies that influence the stability and maintainability of the application.
9. A framework for integrating automated test selection into software development workflows to enhance efficiency and reduce redundant testing.
10. Insights into best practices for targeted testing, helping teams optimize resources and improve software quality.
