Research Manager: Microfluidic tools for life sciences

The Biosensors group (Division MeBioS) within the Biosystems department (Science Engineering and Technology) is looking for a Research Manager in the field of microfluidics for life sciences. The Research Manager will support and develop the research of the Biosensors group with respect to microfluidic tools, in order to deepen our comprehension of cellular behavior and interactions but also to offer practical solutions in disease diagnostics and therapeutic development. As such, the Research Manager will work at the interface between biology and technology.

Responsibilities

* Initializing and attracting research projects - detect opportunities for attracting research projects by building up knowledge on (inter)national research programs and take a leading role in forming research consortia and writing project applications, focusing on the development of innovative microfluidic solutions for advancing single-cell analysis and spatial biology
* Coordinating and supporting ongoing research projects and activities within the research unit - discuss the progress of the ongoing projects with the researchers within and outside the research unit, report results and progress achieved in these research projects, take a leading role in supervising publishing of the research results in international reputable scientific journals, and follow up relevant internal and external developments in the relevant research fields
* Contributing to the development of the research unit's research vision/strategy - assist the head of the research unit in determining and realizing the strategic plan of the group by defining priorities and specific objectives
* People management - actively participate in day-to-day coaching as well as supporting and motivating co-workers in the research unit (PhD students and lab assistants), participate in evaluating and recruiting new scientific staff (PhD students and lab assistants) by mapping the needed expertise with respect to different research projects and activities, contribute to creating a good work climate that stimulates creativity and innovative research
* Valorization of research results - contribute to transferring research results to industrial market and society in general
* Networking and dissemination - work on developing a network relevant for the expertise of the research unit by looking for the opportunities in the area of the unit's research interest and add to the visibility of the research unit by participating and presenting in the (inter)national conferences/meetings/seminars, by organizing the (inter)national conferences/meetings/seminars and by supervising publishing of research results in international reputable scientific journals

Profile

* PhD in Bioscience Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years post-doc experience in microfluidics for life sciences
* An extensive track record of high-impact research output (peer-reviewed publications, patents, conference contributions), with preferably 10 years of relevant research experience
* More specifically, profound knowledge on developing microfluidic and microfabricated devices and integration with state-of-the-art downstream omics analysis technologies for life science research, and/or integration with innovative bioassays for next generation diagnostic tests.
* Proven ability to secure funding, with experience in writing grant proposals (national, regional, EU), scientific reports and publications
* Experience in managing and coordinating multi-partner research projects (with respect to the scientific progress, people management as well as reporting), between multiple units within and outside the organization
* Experience in working within large academic and industrial consortia
* Experience in managing multiple projects at the same time
* Experience in presenting results and reports to third parties (e.g. collaborators, industry, conferences)
* Experience in people management (managing >5 researchers at the same time as well as managing partners within and outside the organization)
* Experience in networking and bringing different parties together to respond to the opportunities in the field of microfluidics for life sciences
* Experience with identifying relevant market/field opportunities for establishing a long-term strategy of the organization
* Experience in financial management of national, regional or EU projects is considered an asset
* Fluent in Dutch and English, both written and spoken

* Full time position as Research Manager with a contract of indefinite duration, starting beginning of 2026 (exact date to be determined mutually)
