Freelance Senior Data Engineer
Location: Brussels (Hybrid – 2 days per week on-site)

Overview
We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join one of our sector-leading banking clients on a long-term freelance basis. This role sits within a mature data environment and will play a key part in designing, building, and maintaining scalable data solutions that support critical business and regulatory use cases.
The role is hybrid, with 2 days per week on-site in Brussels and the remainder remote.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable data pipelines and data platforms
Work closely with data architects, analysts, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality data solutions
Develop and optimize ETL/ELT processes for large-scale datasets
Ensure data quality, reliability, performance, and security in line with banking standards
Contribute to best practices around data engineering, automation, and CI/CD
Support data governance, lineage, and documentation requirements
Troubleshoot and resolve complex data issues in production environments
Required Skills & Experience
Proven experience as a Senior Data Engineer in complex, enterprise environments
Strong hands-on experience with:
SQL and Python (or similar data-focused languages)
Data warehousing and data lake architectures
ETL/ELT frameworks and pipeline orchestration tools
Experience working in banking or financial services environments (strongly preferred)
Solid understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Experience with big data technologies (e.g. Spark, Databricks, Kafka) is a strong plus
Strong communication skills and ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Nice to Have
Experience with regulatory or risk-related data use cases
Knowledge of data governance and security best practices
Previous long-term freelance engagements in enterprise organisations
