Freelance Data Engineer – Data Warehousing & Analytics
We are looking for an experienced freelance Data Engineer to support the modernization of a large, mission-critical data platform within an energy and infrastructure environment. You will join agile development teams working on the evolution of an in-house Gas Flow Management application suite.
Your focus will be on designing and maintaining a central Data Warehouse, building high-performance ETL pipelines, semantic models, and reporting solutions that support core business processes such as contracting, flow planning, invoicing, and data publication. You will work in a governed enterprise environment and collaborate closely with technical leads, data teams, and infrastructure specialists.
The current platform is based on Microsoft SQL Server (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS) and is gradually migrating towards the Azure Data & Analytics stack as part of a long-term data modernization program supporting the energy transition (H2, biomethane, CO2).
Key responsibilities
* Design and implement data warehouses and datamarts (Kimball methodology)
* Develop and optimize ETL pipelines using Microsoft BI technologies
* Build semantic models and analytics-ready datasets
* Contribute to agile ceremonies, releases, testing, and peer reviews
* Support end-users with data lineage, transformations, and insights
Required expertise
* Proven experience as a freelance Data Engineer / BI Consultant
* Strong knowledge of data warehousing principles (Kimball)
* Hands-on experience with SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS
* Experience working in agile BI or data teams
* Fluent in English
Assets
* Experience with Azure analytics tools (ADF, ADLS, Synapse, Databricks, etc.)
* Power BI experience
* Familiarity with governed environments (Git, branching, DevOps pipelines)
* Energy sector background
* Dutch and/or French speaking
Assignment details
* Initial contract: 12 months, with strong likelihood of multi-year extension
* Location: Brussels (hybrid model – up to 2 days remote/week)
* Start: ASAP
