ASSIGNMENT

The Faculty of Law and Criminology wishes to strengthen the academic education and research in private international law by recruiting:

A part-time tenure track assistant professor, with a focus on conflicts of laws in persons and family related matters

* A part-time tenure track assistant professor with a focus onconflicts of laws in patrimonial, business and economic matters sensu lato.

Both positions can be combined into a full-time position.

Recruitment will take place within the Department of Interdisciplinary Study of Law, Private Law and Business Law (RE21).

Academic education

* You will teach various courses in the field of private international law. This assignment comprises the following courses for both focus areas:

* Private international law (master of laws; teaching language: Dutch)

* Advanced private international law (elective course in master of laws; teaching language: Dutch))
* Moot court private international law (elective course in master of laws; teaching language: English)
* Notarial private international law (co-teaching, depending on needs; teaching language: Dutch)
* International and European procedure (co-teaching, depending on needs; teaching language: English)

This teaching assignment may evolve in the future.

* Within these subject areas, you will also take initiatives and provide education in the context of lifelong learning (Gandaius Academy).

Academic research

* You will develop innovative and internationally recognized research in private international law, within the focus area(s) of your appointment.

Institutional and societal engagement

* You will use your expertise and experience to support the work of the faculty and the university.
* You will play a meaningful role in translating your expertise into policy and practice.

PROFILE

* You have a strong academic CV with international visibility in the requested field:

* Your achievements in the field of research and education contribute to the development of the scientific domain (e.g. publications, presentations, or other academic output);

* You are capable to initiate and supervise educational and research projects and to acquire the necessary funding for this;
* You are didactically skilled to teach university students to develop academic competences;
* A track record in international mobility is recommended (e.g. education, research, economic, or societal).

* You work in a collaborative way and integrate smoothly into the department and faculty. You look for opportunities inside and outside the university and actively use your network to do so.

* You show leadership potential. More information about leadership at Ghent University.
* You are proficient in the relevant teaching languages (Dutch and English). This will be assessed based on your application file. More information about the language requirements and appropriate language guidance at Ghent University.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

* We offer you a temporary appointment of either 50% or 100%, depending on the case, in a Tenure Track system for a period of five years. If positively evaluated by the University Board, you will be offered a tenured position as an associate professor.
* If you already hold a position as a professor at another university or research institution, you can be appointed immediately to the rank of lecturer, without prejudice to the possibility of a temporary appointment.

Please note that a part-time assignment within a specific degree of the professorial staff cannot be combined with a part-time assignment in a different degree for professorial staff at Ghent University.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

The selection committee will carry out an initial, substantive screening of the admissible applications based on the application file. This assessment takes into consideration both the candidate's merits and potential.

Ghent University emphasizes the qualitative assessment of academic performance. Therefore, candidates are asked in the application form to mention their most important and impactful academic or non-academic achievements.

For shortlisted candidates, the following steps in the selection procedure shall consist of at least:

* a selection interview in which the vision and planning regarding education, research, and institutional and societal engagement as well as the embedding in the bigger picture are discussed
* a trial lesson on a subject in the relevant field
* a screening of leadership and interpersonal skills

The ranking of candidates within each focus area will determine whether the selection committee proposes one full-time or two part-time appointments. A full-time appointment is only possible if the nominated candidate is ranked first in at least one of the two focus areas, and has sufficient affinity with the other focus area to be able to lead high-quality research and to supply academic teaching in that other sub-area

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

* You hold a doctoral degree in law or a diploma or certificate recognized as equivalent.
* You have at least two years of postdoctoral experience on 1 september 2026. This term of two years is determined by the date mentioned on the required diploma.
* Your application meets the formal requirements (submitted on time, complete: with a completed application form and a copy of the diploma, submitted via e-recruitment).

Your application must include the following documents:

* In the field 'Application form': the application form any attachments, and a cover letter (max. 1 page) explaining why you believe you meet the job requirements, merged into one pdf file. Additional documents may be requested from shortlisted candidates.
* In the field 'Diploma': a transcript of your doctoral degree. If you have a foreign diploma in a language other than our national languages (Dutch, French or German) or English, please add a translation in one of the mentioned languages.
* In the field 'Certificate of equivalence': only for diplomas awarded outside the European Union: certificate of equivalence (NARIC) (if already in your possession). For diplomas awarded in the UK before January 31st of 2020, a certificate of equivalence is not required.

Note that the maximum file size for each field is 10 MB.
