What does your day look like as a Data Engineer at Smollan?
You’ll be part of an international data & technology team that delivers reliable, scalable data solutions to support our business across markets. Working primarily from home, with regular travel to Slovenia, you’ll take real ownership of your data pipelines while collaborating closely with architects, analysts, and other engineers.
From ingestion to insight, you play a key role in ensuring our data is resilient, observable, and ready to power decision-making. 🙌
In this role, you will contribute to:
* Designing, building, and maintaining end-to-end data pipelines (batch and near-real-time) from APIs, transactional databases, and external sources.
* Transforming and modeling data using Spark and Python to create reliable, well-structured datasets for downstream users.
* Optimising our Azure data platform, working with Synapse, Azure SQL, and Data Lake to improve performance, partitioning, and schema evolution.
* Monitoring and observability: defining metrics, alerts, and checks to proactively detect and resolve data issues.
* Maintaining CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments to ensure secure, versioned, and high-quality data artefacts.
In short: you help ensure our data is scalable, reliable, and business-ready.
Do you recognise yourself in this profile?
✔ You have solid data engineering experience in a commercial environment and enjoy delivering solutions incrementally.
✔ You have hands-on experience with the Azure ecosystem (Synapse, Azure SQL, Databricks).
✔ You are proficient in Python and Spark.
✔ You have experience with CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps and/or GitHub Actions).
✔ You understand geospatial data processing, such as spatial joins and projections.
✔ You are familiar with monitoring and observability tools and believe in “you build it, you run it.”
✔ You are proactive, analytical, and comfortable testing and refining solutions for resilience.
✔ You communicate clearly and enjoy working in an international team.
✔ English is required; additional languages are a plus.
Nice to have:
Experience with GCP, Docker/Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), or orchestration tools like Airflow.
