We are seeking an experienced Freelance Java Developer to support key digital and regulatory transformation projects within one of Belgium's leading utilities organisations (energy, grid operations, metering, or market facilitation).
Logistics:
* Position: Freelance Java Developer (Utilities Sector)
* Duration: 12-month rolling contract (extensions expected)
* Location: Belgium (Hybrid – 1–2 days on-site)
* Start Date: ASAP or within notice
* Day Rate: €(Competitive & Negotiable)
* Languages: English (French or Dutch is a plus)
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and maintain backend services using Java (Spring/Spring Boot)
* Build and secure REST APIs supporting utilities operations
* Contribute to system integrations within complex energy ecosystems
* Help modernise legacy platforms into service-oriented/microservices architectures
* Collaborate with analysts, testers, and architects in Agile squads
* Ensure performance, reliability, and code quality through testing and reviews
* Support CI/CD pipelines and DevOps best practices
* Promote clean coding, maintainability, and continuous improvement
Ideal Candidate:
* 4+ years of Java backend development experience
* Demonstrable tenure within Belgian utilities companies (grid operators, suppliers, water/electricity providers, or market facilitators like Atrias, Fluvius, Sibelga, ORES, Elia)
* Strong grasp of OOP, SOLID principles, and enterprise development
* Experience with Spring, Maven/Gradle, REST APIs, SQL/Oracle/PostgreSQL
* Familiar with integration patterns or messaging (Kafka/MQ)
* Used to working in Agile teams with cross-functional stakeholders
* Strong communicator with a quality-first engineering mindset
* Comfortable with unit testing, code reviews, and clean architecture
Desirable:
* Experience in regulated environments
* Knowledge of energy market processes or messaging standards (e.g., MIG6)
* Familiarity with CI/CD, DevSecOps, containers, or cloud deployments
* Understanding of event-driven architectures (nice to have)
