Our client within a European public-sector institution is seeking a Junior AI Governance & Compliance Specialist to support the implementation of AI governance frameworks and regulatory compliance initiatives

What you will do:
* Support AI Act compliance activities by applying established governance procedures, guidelines, and assessment methodologies.
* Review and assess AI systems from a governance and compliance perspective, considering their capabilities, limitations, risks, and intended use.
* Work closely with AI system owners, technical teams, and business stakeholders to collect information required for compliance assessments and documentation.
* Support the classification and evaluation of AI systems in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
* Maintain compliance records, governance documentation, assessment reports, and supporting evidence.
* Contribute to transparency, risk management, and accountability activities throughout the AI system lifecycle.
* Assist in monitoring compliance obligations and ensuring governance processes are consistently applied across AI initiatives.
* Support the preparation of reports, templates, and documentation required for AI governance and regulatory compliance activities.
What you need to be a great match:
* Up to 2 years of professional experience, internships, traineeships, academic research, or project work in AI governance, AI compliance, data science, technology consulting, AI solutions, public policy, or a related field.
* Good understanding of AI systems, including their capabilities, limitations, and common use cases.
* Familiarity with AI and machine learning concepts, including foundation models, generative AI applications, and modern AI system architectures.
* Understanding of what constitutes an AI system and the ability to analyse AI solutions from a governance and compliance perspective.
* Interest in AI regulation, responsible AI, and the EU AI Act.
* Ability to gather, analyse, and document information from technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to interact regularly with system owners and business representatives.
* Proactive mindset and ability to work independently while managing multiple activities and deadlines.
* Experience with documentation, reporting, compliance processes, or governance activities is considered an advantage.
* Exposure to AI, data analytics, or programming tools such as Python, R, or similar technologies is a plus, but hands-on development is not the primary focus of the role.
About the role
This is not a software development or data science position. The focus is on supporting AI Act compliance activities through the application of established governance procedures and frameworks. The role requires a solid understanding of AI systems and their operation, combined with strong stakeholder engagement, documentation, and compliance support capabilities.

Contract type: Freelancer agreement
Workplace type: The role is primarily remote, with the requirement to be based near Brussels, Belgium and available to reach the premises within two (2) hours when necessary.
