The Department ofMathematics in the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Geometry and/or Dynamics
Position
Phd Research
You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of geometry and/or dynamics. Your research topic will fall in the intersection of the current research lines of Prof Sonja Hohloch and Prof Tom Mestdag, see here for their webpages. A non-exhaustive list of topics includes, for example, symplectic geometry, (non-)integrable Hamiltonian systems, Floer homology, symmetries of differential equations, geometric mechanics, Finsler geometry, …. The precise topic will be decided, in consultation with the selected candidate, at the start of the scholarship.
You will organise your own PhD research and report on your progress regularly.
You will participate in the doctoral study programme at the Antwerp Doctoral School to support your PhD pathway.
You will present the findings of your PhD research at academic conferences and you willpublish them in scientific journals.
Education
You will provide support with teaching and also teach high-quality academic classes yourself in Mathematics. Your teaching assignment may include basic mathematics courses as well as more specialized courses in your research domain.
You will supervise students and their Bachelor and Master dissertations.
Services
If eligible, you will apply in the first year of your appointment for a PhD Fellowship at the Science Foundation – Flanders (FWO).
You will play an active role in the academic and societal service provision of the Department of Mathematics. For example, you will assist in student recruitment and alumni activities and serve on boards and committees,...
Profile
You hold a Master degree in Mathematics, Physics or Engineering Sciences, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
You did not yet obtain a PhD in Mathematics.
You have a very good and broad knowledge of analysis, dynamical systems and differential geometry.
Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
You are motivated to work actively on your further professional development.
You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
You are willing to learn Dutch if you do not yet speak it.
What we offer
We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of one year. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another period of one year, up until a maximum of 4 years in total.
The planned start date is October 1, 2026.
Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders
You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
As a doctoral researcher, you will have access to a wide and varied range of courses and an educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School .
You will do most of your work at Campus Middelheim in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
