This PhD project is focused on geopolitical trends in international economics. It includes estimation of the effect of trade sanctions on “bystander” countries that are neither targets of these sanctions nor members of the sanctioning coalition. It also includes an empirical exploration of the geographical borders of export markets and their implications for international spillovers of monetary policy. Finally, it aims to use a quantitative model of currency choice to analyse how far away the US dollar is from losing its dominance in international trade markets. Development of alternative topics within international economics is actively encouraged. ul liYou will draw up a research plan and corresponding research methods in consultation with your supervisor and undertake the necessary administration for a smooth PhD process. /li liYou will conduct the research efficiently and to an appropriate standard, possibly abroad, and compete for funding for general or specific costs. /li liYou will report progress to your supervisor and committees, and present your research at scientific conferences. /li liYou will defend your thesis publicly and aim for publication in the scientific press. /li /ul /li liYou will make a supporting, scientific contribution to existing research projects or lines of research within beyond your own doctoral research. /li liYou will compete for internal or external pre‑doctoral funding. /li liIn addition to project‑based research, you will also be responsible for a limited range of support tasks related to teaching within the Department of Economics. /li /ul h3Profile /h3 ul liYou hold a master degree in economics or another relevant discipline. Candidates who have not yet obtained their degree must be able to present their diploma by the time of appointment. /li liYou can provide evidence of excellent study results. /li liYou have experience with empirical and theoretical research in economics and possess strong quantitative skills. Proficiency in Stata is recommended. /li liYou have a good knowledge of English, both oral and written. /li liYour teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision. /li liYou act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation. /li liAbility to work independently and develop your own research topics, as well as commitment to securing external pre‑doctoral funding, is strongly encouraged. /li /ul h3What we offer /h3 ul liA doctoral scholarship for a period of one year.
